Our Concept: WHY We Serve Firefighters...

The brave men and women of our fire department are first responders who eliminate fire-related hazards and help keep our local communities safe. Often times, firefighters handle threats caused by food left on the stove—the leading cause of U.S. home fires and fire injuries, as well as the third leading cause of fire deaths. In addition to extinguishing frequent cooking equipment fires, these heroic public servants must also educate the public about safe cooking practices to prevent future incidents. Our firefighters are committed to the meaningful work that protects life, property, and the environment in the districts they serve. Food on the Stove is dedicated to giving back to these expert rescuers by addressing the leading cause of death among firefighters: heart disease. Members of this profession often pass away within five years of retirement due to health-related illnesses such as sudden cardiac arrest, cancer, and diabetes. While firefighters extinguish fires caused by food on the stove, our organization promotes safe and heart-healthy eating habits to improve the food on their stoves and, ultimately, protect their quality of life.

Our Purpose: WHAT We Do…

Food on the Stove increases awareness about health and wellness within the fire service by providing tools and resources to help members maintain healthier lifestyles with heart-healthy eating practices and fitness activities.

Our Contribution: HOW We Serve…

Food on the Stove addresses healthy lifestyle management from a holistic perspective, and with a particular focus on dietary nutrition and cardiovascular exercise. We are uniquely qualified to execute our mission as a firefighter- operated organization. Based on our first-hand knowledge of the specific health challenges that firefighters confront, we have made a commitment to:

  • Supplement the cost of weekly firehouse meals by partnering with small grocery stores or grocery delivery services
  • Provide heart-healthy cooking demonstrations to firehouses to offer more education about nutrition and portion control
  • Host fitness activities and health screenings to encourage wellness lifestyle integration
